About Dr. Maja

About

Being a family physician is quite a privilege as it affords us the opportunity to be in touch with the community we serve and the patients who rely on us for their healthcare needs. No other speciality provides the physicians with direct contact to the patients’ most pressing needs, their vulnerabilities and family structure as well as general practice does.

I am therefore quite honoured to be working in back general practice, applying the core ethos of family and community medicine like respect, confidentiality, hospitality, care, compassion and excellence.

My journey as a family physician started in South Africa, where I was born and raised. I graduated from medical school in 1997 and my passion for travel and adventure took me to countries like Canada (where I practised family medicine for a year), then a brief stint in the UK before finally settling in Australia in 2002.

I started as a hospital PHO in Bundaberg and later moved to the Gold Coast in 2003, where I worked as a General Practitioner until 2010. I thought this would be my last year in GP as I pursued other interests in between.

I was so fortunate to obtain opportunities to work as a locum medical officer in various hospitals all over the country…. Rural, Remote, Indigenous and Regional locations. I met some wonderful people along the way and really got to know the real Ozzie culture.

I returned to General Practice this year (2021) for some stability and continuity of care and I can’t wait to serve the Liverpool community.

I enjoy engaging in philanthropic activities and as such, I have started an organisation which aims to support women who are divorced, separated and widowed to help them navigate their new lives and provide them with the necessary resources
